Description & Analysis

In its first full year of steam-powered coining the Philadelphia Mint struck nearly as many half dollars as it had during the final years of manually-powered presses. Production would have been higher, were it not for technical problems in obtaining a full strike. The mint experimented with four different collar diameters in an attempt to get the border to become fully formed, and many of the 1837 half dollars are deficient in this feature.

This date is fairly common in the lower Mint State grades, but gems are rather scarce. A few pieces have been certified as PL (prooflike).

Frequent erosion and cracking problems drove up the number of dies needed. Numismatists have identified 26 die marriages which resulted from the pairing of 19 obverses and 23 reverses. Scarce varieties include Graham/Reiver-1, GR-11, GR-25 and GR-26. These are of interest primarily to series specialists, and none merit a separate line entry in popular catalogs.
