Description & Analysis

A famous and highly regarded rarity of the Capped Head Left type, not quite as scarce as the 1815 but with no more than 15-18 specimens believed known in all grades. Most examples grade VF to XF, with few Mint State pieces known.

This issue was considered at one time to be the third rarest of all gold coins issued. Then a few began to surface here and there, with two in Colonel Green's holdings. Today the 5D Over 50 is considered on a par with the regular dies 1819, although the regular dies is represented by two die varieties. Apparently since the 0 in the denomination is of the proper size for a half dollar, the engraver must have absent-mindedly thought he was working on that denomination, the same mistake being displayed on the rare 1822 and 1828 quarters.
