Description & Analysis

With a high mintage, this issue is fairly common across all grades short of MS 65. Even at that level there appear to be more than the usual number of entries for this coin type. Nice circulated survivors resulted from the fact that collectors began seeking these coins from pocket change just 17 years later with the arrival of coin boards for what was then erroneously called the "Morgan" Quarter.

Perhaps embarrassed by the very large number of date punching errors in 1908, the Philadelphia Mint's engraving department began this year applying the date to a master die. All working hubs and working dies were then taken from that master, assuring that the appearance of the date remained constant. Though the style and exact position of the date might vary from one year to the next, no longer would there be any oddities within a particular year's coinage. Mintmarks, however, remained hand punched for another 80 years.
