Description & Analysis

This is a high mintage issue that has survived in good numbers over a broad spectrum of grades. Of course, most examples are quite heavily worn, as is true of the series in general. Mint State pieces are relatively plentiful, with more than the usual number of gems certified.

New master hubs were introduced for both sides of the Barber Quarter this year, and dies from both the old pair and new pair were used to strike coins. The obverse master of 1892-1900 (Obverse 1) has the inside of Liberty's ear mostly hollow, and the laurel leaves have rounded tips. The new hub used 1900-1916 (Obverse 2) features more pointed leaves and an additional rib of cartilage within Liberty's ear. On the old reverse hub used mid-1892 to 1900 the eagle's wingtips extend only to the tops of the letters E in UNITED and AMERICA, while the wingtips very clearly overlap the tops of these letters on the new hub of 1900-16. Since this was actually the third reverse for the Barber Quarter, the first being used only in the opening months of 1892, these hub changes have been labeled Reverses 2 and 3, respectively.

The 1900(P) quarter is known with the obverse/reverse hub pairings 1/2 and 2/3. To date, none have been found pairing one old side with one new side. Thus far, collectors have shown little interest in their relative rarities, and no premiums have been attached to one or the other.
