Description & Analysis

This low mintage issue is scarce across all grades, and pieces grading F and higher are in constant demand. The number of Mint State survivors is low, even in proportion to the mintage, and gems are very rare. The even greater rarity of the 1901-S quarter dollar has added to the half dollar's perceived desirability, but it is respectable issue in its own right.

Like most S-Mint coins of the period, the 1901-S half dollar was well made, with excellent luster and strike being the rule. This date/mint is found with either the old obverse hub of 1896-1900 or the new one that debuted this year. The old (Type 1) hub is the more often seen variety, but the rarity and price of 1901-S halves precludes much interest in collecting both.

Aside from minor positional shifts for the date and mintmark, there are no varieties for this entry.
