Description & Analysis

America entered an economic recession in 1914, and this is reflected in the relatively low mintage of 1915(P) dimes. Despite this development, the surviving number of Mint State pieces is nearly as high for adjacent P-Mint issues. It seems that those inclined to save new rolls of coins were able to obtain their quota.

A much larger date punch of rather clumsy style was adopted for the dimes of 1915-16, and it's not known what prompted this change. These unusual numerals are likewise seen on foreign coins struck at U. S. Mints during the same period.
