Description & Analysis

As the American economy began its recovery from the depression of 1893-96, dime mintages rose at all three mints. Philadelphia struck more than five times as many pieces in 1897 as it had the previous year.

This many coins meant a far greater number of dies, and one result was the creation of at least five repunched date varieties. Some of these are quite minor, but the better ones are recognized by NGC under its VarietyPlus Service.

This issue is fairly plentiful in Mint State, with enough gems available to satisfy the upper end of the market. Many will show signs of die erosion, but the pool of survivors is large enough that collectors can find a sharp example with some patience.
