Description & Analysis

More than three million dimes were coined at the San Francisco Mint in 1891, and this seems to have reduced the demand for additional pieces in 1892. Thus the inaugural S-Mint Barber Dime had a modest production of under a million coins and is scarce across all grades. A smattering of Mint State pieces are known, probably from coins saved for the novelty of their design, but gems are very rare.

Some coins are known with prooflike fields, but these are often worn or otherwise impaired to a degree that the dimes cannot be so designated.
