...............who you are and what series you are collecting in the Registry.

Hi to all, I was just wanting to get to know some of you here since I am new.

I would like to see who is into what ! Lets see...........

Are you a Modern Maniac ?

Tradedollarnut ?

Or maybe you just like playing with your very own Type Set ? shy.gif

Do I see a juggler in the crowd ? juggle.gif

O.K., I will start us off.

I am Fergie and I collect mostly "minors", that is to say any coin which is not the "major", which is the silver dollar.

My passion is wheat cents. cloud9.gif

Other coins are Jeffs,Rosies,Washies, and a scattering of "old" coins.

I do want to make a decent type set and will work on that alot.

Double dies and RPMs are another favorite, and injuns, and Large cents, walkers are cool too. O.K, I guess i'm a juggler. juggle.gif

My favorite collector type I would like to have friendly competition with on the Registry/ Forum would be a Die Variety specialist type, in all/any coin series.

World coins and medals are all good too. juggle.gif

And you are........................................ 893scratchchin-thumb.gif

I also thought I might lure you into a set from '38-'64.....with a trade perhaps thumbsup2.gif I have alot of raw early Jeffs. Well, a very good supply anyway.

Do you collect the varities much bsshog40 ?

Yippee a Jefferson fellow ! 893applaud-thumb.gif

I accidently got into these jeffersons. Don't ask me how. I don't have anything below the SMS65' except a few old hole fillers. I'm more of a Mint proof set and S.E. collector. I pick up odds and ends here and there just because. The only jeffersons I have two of are a 1965 SMS NGC MS67, and a 1967 PCGS MS65 (not a registry nickel).

Fergie, for a newbie to the boards, you sure let your presence be known. thumbsup2.gif

I personally have no interest in VAM's and minor varieties. They just don't do anything for me. It's all just the same ole chit to me. Maybe that is why I am primarily a type collector. I seek the best example of each series that I can afford at the time. I even think that all of the arrows this and rays that is too extreme for a type set but I am forced to follow this criteria because of their inclusion in both the Dansco 7070 type album and the NGC registry.

So, obviously, type coins are my main interest.

My secondary interest is the commemorative dollar series. I lack just 10 coins in the whole proof/ms series which are housed in their respective Dansco album. However, post 2000, there is still no new album so I recently ordered an album with blank 38mm slots.

I have some medals and SCD's as well but not a whole slew of them.

I also have a complete set of Walkers, Franklins, Ikes and Mercs (except for the '16 D).

I like the Pandas, too, but don't have too many of them. I'm still waiting for my 25th anniversary set even though it's been over a week since Panda America has charged me for the set.

I also like romantic strolls on the beach and sunsets... tongue.gif

Hi bsshog40,

Do you have any 1968 proof sets in your holdings, or what kind of dates ?

I guess the answer to the var's ? is no ?

And are you into registering a year proof set ? As in 1968 or whatever ?

Thanks for the kind words there, Fergie. thumbsup2.gif Actually, this set has been assembled over the past 3-4 years. I'm 41 now and didn't start collecting again until August of 2002 having collected seriously as a kid from 10-13.

I'm 36? 893scratchchin-thumb.gif I was 35 yesterday... tongue.gif But, I have a gorgeous PCGS F15 1805 dime in the mail to me as we speak. This will put me #34 and 200 points behind Rexcat, a cool guy and a collector after my own heart. cloud9.gif

I need to find something worth 201 points because I've been eating his dust for tooooooooo long. grin.gif Naw.....I'm not competitive. wink.gif But, I will not compromise on eye-appeal for my coins. I have compromised some by buying lower grades than I would have prefered but I am gaining an appreciation for them. For instance, check out the 1842 dollar. It was a recent ebay purchase and I was damn lucky to get it so cheap at $351. Sure, that's the listed price but such a wonderful, problem-free example does not come around often!!!

Hey... makepoint.gifmakepoint.gifmakepoint.gif...that's for stirring up my memory concerning the 1942 silver proof Jefferson. It was in an NGC PR67 holder. I still regret ever breaking the coin out and having NCS conserve it, especially since they totally disregarded my command not to conserve the reverse with the gorgeous sky blue toning over Monticello. I wrote three times not to touch the reverse. They totally dissed me and did what they pleased anyway. How lame can you be? mad.gif And, to rub the salt in the wounds even more, the coin downgraded 2 points.

At the time, I was cracking the coins out for my Dansco album because I do like the presentation of them together like that. Big mistake! Not only have I been burned by 3 downgrades but there is also the risk of spittle, fingerprints, slide marks and toning.

Rule #1. Do not crack the coin out of the holder unless there is a darn good reason to do so.

Rule #2. Do not buy a coin with buts. This would be a good coin "but" for....

Rule #3. Buy from a reputable seller. My favorite is www.markfeldcoins.com

Rule #4. Have passion for what you collect!

And a powerful suggestion: have photos of your coins. The only good a registry set serves w/o photos is to bolster the owner's ego. It certainly does not benefit others much at all. I refuse to even look at an individual's registry set if they don't have photos along with it. I did make an exception in your case, though, Fergie. grin.gif

Woowee, nice accomplishment ! Especially since your coins are very PQ and tough to locate as such . 893applaud-thumb.gif

Like I said EZ_E, same gene pool. That 1842 does not look circulated at all. The surfaces are excellent. Looks more like a coin that sat in one of the old time "Coin Cabinet " collections and got 100 years of the collector opening the drawer "rub" for him to admire it. It's exactly wat I would love to find too. cloud9.gif

especially since they totally disregarded my command not to conserve the reverse with the gorgeous sky blue toning over Monticello.

Sorry about that, but how about I try and make it up a little anyway. gossip.gif

I have what I call the "the dirty dozen", a group of 12 proof sets

which all exhibit that same gorgeous sky blue on the nickel ! Now, mind you, I am low budget so the date run is 1962, but hey, Blue is Blue Baby ! I was intending on certifying them one day. I got em at the Milwaukee CSNS show.

The Nickels are absolutely, positively, drop dead gorgeous ! When I got them home I could'nt believe it, hands down the single most gorgeous coins I own. Well, they are in the pliofilm, my best judgement is TomB's quote, .05% are true monsters ? Rainbows, and possibly a cameo or two, and most are guaranteed stars I think. Send me a PM, and I'll send them by for you to see em if you like. thumbsup2.gif

And hey, my registry ain't much. I don't buy certified coins often., and yes pictures coming soon.

Fergie

Edited to add; all my quotes are bckward in this post.

Great comment that the 1842 $ is really uncirculated with lots and lots of drawer friction. thumbsup2.gif

And, I think that is a first: a poster quoting themselves. crazy.gif

So, I have x-ray call tonight and am being constantly called in. What's your excuse for being up so late? confused-smiley-013.gif

Yikes the first I heard of this travesty Vic ... What were trying to conserve on the coin that you felt a 'need' to crack and send in.

I dont think they can conserve one side and not the other - they should said sorry all or nada at which I am sure you would have said nada ... You know what they say about the sight in the rear view smile.gif

I want to complete my Modern Silver Dollar Commemorative collection and my Sacagawea set. I think the Modern silver dollar commemorative collection is a great set to start for new collectors. As I started this collection I have purchased books such as ANA Grading Standards, Coin Grading and Counterfeit Detection, The Red Book and many more so that I could learn more about coins before I started purchasing other coins. I plan to start a Peace Dollar collection as soon as the right one crosses my path (I have a few but nothing worthy of plastic). I have learned a great deal from my Modern Collection and only waisted a small amount of money at the very beginning. I have a long ways to go, I will recieve 3 70s and 1 69 to add to my registry set this week, im excited. Im gonna have to start adding pictures soon but I think i may have to upgrade my Sony 4.1 Mega Pixel camera first and buy some lights.

Because I was not a very smart man...in the words of Forrest Gump. blush.gif

I was placing my coins in the Dansco 7070 at the time. The obverse toning was only so so and I thought that it would be improved with conservation.

Yep, the school of hard knocks is often the best teacher.

Hi CoinCurious,

Your introduction was so informative I thought it bears repeating here.

Everybody should be sure to read it.

It is indeed exciting to have your own Registry Set !

Anyone who does not, jump in, the waters fine !

I see CoinCurious needs only the 2001S Sac to complete a 69 UC set, way to go !

Too bad the turncoat has em all in PCGS holders. makepoint.gif

Your Modern Commemorative set looks like a very fun set too.

I see you Started the Classic Commem Set with an 1893 Columbian in AG3 !

To my S.A.E. Mint State Set I just added

1993 MS69

To my Jefferson Set, I'm adding

1979-S Type 2 PR-69DCAM (that'll fill both type 1 and 2 for that year)

1981-S Type 1 PR-69DCAM

1981-S Type 2 PR-69DCAM (that'll fill both type 1 and 2 for that year)

2000-S PR-69DCAM

2001-S PR-69DCAM

To my Sacagawea Set

2000-S PR-69DCAM

To my SBA

1979-S PR-69DCAM Type 1

I too must admit to enjoying the Anthony $1 series, both proof and mint state. I'm not certain what appeals, but perhaps it's the odd 11-sided inset and reduced Eisenhower $1 lunar landing reverse. It certainly isn't the portrait, which makes its (unfortunate) subject appear far more homely and severe than she was in life! I find toned examples in either finish quite attractive.

I also think the manageability of such a relatively small set (whether proof or mint state) combined with the challenge of some serious keys (1979-P Wide Rim, 1981-S, proof 1979-S Type 2, proof 1981-S Type 2) provides a very nice microcosm in which to contemplate embarking on any larger series.

Continued good fortune in assembling your set,

Luckily I got a 79 Type 2 a while back in NGC 70 - I can not find myself plunking the $ for a 70 version of the 81 though ... not at those prices ... I have a nice PCGS example in 69 that looks nice.

By the way, you must have been a real nerd when you were a kid. I don't know anyone who was serious between the ages, 10-13.

However, you do have one thing going for you...............and it isn't your good looks.................as long as you aren't collecting Morgans for a registry set, we can remain friends and I have more to choose from..................but I don't have a registry set.

Does this mean that you can no longer "rub elbows" with the hoi polloi? hi.gif

Far date (narrow rim) is relatively easy to find in high grade (MS 67) and not inordinately expensive. Expect to pay maybe $100 or less.

Near date (wide rim) is tougher and expensive. At NGC the current MS 67 population is 33/0, versus 87/4, so it's roughly three times scarcer at high grade. Expect to pay $500 or more.

Both are easy to find in MS 66 or 65, but always expect a premium for the wide variety as compared to its narrow rim counterpart.

BTW, the reason I use the terms narrow and wide rim is that the rim thickness changed while the date position on the coin's obverse remained constant. I appreciate, however, that it's easier to diagnose the coin's variety by judging the date's distance to the rim than to estimate the rim's thickness directly.

A final interesting note is that the Mint widened the rim to, in their judgment, make the coin look better (they use the fancy term aesthetics). They introduced the wide rim only at Philadelphia in 1979, then used it for all production at all three Mints in 1980 and 1981. The 1999 coins used new master dies, so the term doesn't apply.
