Now that NGC adds points for a star designation, why aren't W designations receiving an extra point? I understand that mainly collectors look for the W, but isn't that the whole point of the registry?

The W designation does not win extra points in the Registry.

 

Collectors are not always in agreement over what qualities they like in a coin. Some collectors are fans of toning, while others like their coins white.

 

NGC’s goal in applying the designation W is to more fully inform a buyer as to what he may expect when ordering a coin sight unseen. NGC is not saying that coins designated "W" are "better" or more desirable than coins without the designation. That is a collector's preference.

 

On the other hand, the star designation specifies a coin that NGC’s graders determined to have exceptional eye appeal for its grade. A Star designation on a coin is automatically assigned an additional value in the registry rankings in order to recognize its exceptional eye appeal.

Would NGC consider the ``O'' designation? It can be for ``old-time originality'' in contrast to the ``W'' designation.

 

I would buy O coins all day long!
