Republic of Central American 8R

Recently I've been sent this CAR 8R of 1846/2 on approval. It's in a PCGS-58 slab but looks quite nice. There is an apparent porous patch in the center of the reverse but I think it could be metal porosity e.g. as made.

 

The leaves are not as full as a choice unc 1824? specimen I bought several years ago at the NYI, however I've been told (by Lou Hudson) that latter CAR's were not as well made.

 

Any comments on the grading of the later CAR 8Rs'?

 

There's a CAR specialist guy on here somewheres: I should try to find him.

I don't have any insight to add, but I do like your coin. I've wanted one of them along with one of those Argentine sun coins. They wouldn't fit in very well with any of my collections, but they look nice.

Actually I did buy 2 really nice Argentine sufaces (both 8R's, an 1813 & a 15 I think) when I was in Argentina in 2002 or 2003. I left one behind because it was a little pricey (a mistake !!!). I sold the worst one of my sunfaces to a dealer/friend as an AU-50. He sent it off to be slabbed and it came back slabbed 58.

 

I should have bought the 3rd one when I was there!!! Anyhow I spent nearly 2K when I was there (much to the concern of my wife) & came back with a whole mass of stuff, ALL of it high grade & some it quite uncommon.

 

I pretty much specialize in Latin American [embarrassing lack of self control].

Since you have a bust coin as your avatar and specialize in Latin America, do you have any interest in US coins that were counterstamped and used in Latin America? I imagine most draped bust coins were counterstamped for use in British colonies in the Caribbean, though.

 

Maybe I could justify the purchases by starting a Latin American crown collection.

Personal opinion without having 'held' the coin:

1. I'd go a grade 55 from the photo

2. the 'porous patch' bothers me, but since you have the coin, so be it

3. do weigh it though, just for fun

Okay I've changed my avatar to an 8R of Iturbide, 1822, unc (not that one can tell from the picture).

 

Not much interest in US coins which were overstamped & used in Latin America. Possibly this is because I don't have any. I was interested in a Montevideo Peso (Uruguay 1844) owned by a dealer but someone else bought it. ANS has one of these in P/L unc overstamped on a USA 1798 Bust dollar.

 

I need to get a good digital scale so I can weigh these critters. I'd prefer it not to have the patch on the reverse but if it's a pre-struck planchlet problem I guess I can live with it.

 

There was a guy here who specialized just in CAR coins: does anyone know his name?
