One of the nicer toned Morgans I have seen -

scheduled for my Grandfather's Birth Year Collection:

1889 - Michael J. Hayes - 1959

I'm not a huge fan of Morgans but I love that!

What is going on in the obverse fields? I see numbers or letters.

There was a thread about this coin, or one very similar to it, a while ago. The seller/poster claimed that the letters were from the album it toned in.... I was suspicious of its originality then, and I'm suspicious of its originality now.

Not sure what you are suspicious of, it is woefully original, almost to a fault.

The letters aren't toning, it is where the coin didn't tone, presumably because ink provides a layer of protection from the old paper which contained sulfur.

Nice looking coins everyone! :applause:

I do NOT have a problem with the Walker. Lettered toning (or, more accurately, lack of toning) is an uncommon form of toning that does occur in certain albums, most notably Whitman coin albums. Obviously ANY form of toning is a personal call as to attractiveness etc. I personally enjoy lettered toning. Here's a couple of mine...

Got this one this week, not so colorful as many of the others posted, but it fills a hole!

Is that what you call hole filling? Dang, man.

This one is special enough that you should start a new thread and brag a little about it.

I'm not much for bragging and despite the low mintage, this one is only an R.2, so not particularly rare!

Here are a couple. One will be cracked out and put in my Dansco 7070. The other is significant because it completes my Morgan Date Set. I am building a complete Date/MM set, but this is a small milestone on that journey.
