1917 matte proof s-l1600.b_zpsepzvyq9u.jpg 1917 matte proof reverse s-l1600.f_zpswh7idrsv.jpg THICK SQUARED RIMS, BRILLIANTLY POLISHED. THE REAL DEAL

"Waldo Brain" mentioned this piece in his turgid tome entitled

"Encylopdia of U S and Colonial Coins ....".

Note the diebreak from the rim down past the side of the L in "LIBERTY" into the field.

Nope, they didn't strike proof Buffernicks in 1917. This coin has shown up several times over the years, and every time the verdict is the same - not a proof. This coin is still not a proof.

You'd think people would learn...I guess not. PCGS/NGC would have NO PROBLEM certifying that coin even if it's cleaned/polished if it were a true proof. But somehow people seem to ignore this point when buying... (shrug)

This buffernick has been SLABBED! proof-63

behold the 1917 matte proof buffalo nickel!

Post the slab.

I'm not calling you a liar, but in this case I don't believe you.

Maybe the NNC guy slabbed it as a proof or the NTC guy or even the ACG/MAC guy. I don't think a mainstream grading service would call it proof; I wouldn't.

I said PCGS or NGC. I doubt that is the case though.

BTW, how can a certified grading company grade a coin "Proof 63" when your description above says it was "polished"? hm

This.. Because there is no record of 1917 Buffalo Nickel proof in PCGS or NGC census.

A proof coin can be polished and this has nothing to do with the coin being a proof or a business strike. Right now on eBay there is an ngc polished 1915 matte proof nickel

Good bye

I won't get into the case of the misidentified 1917 Buffalo ...

I have always held out hope of someday finding one, as my

Dad was born in 1917.

Needless to say, I have my fair share of this date....normal strikes

and Broadstrikes and O/C's.

However, this Thread is set up for newps. I picked up two Quarters

I wanted for my Birthyear Date Set - 1947 - Denver and San Francisco:

Both from GC - PCGS's - MS 66's - and, now...Off to the Bean Factory !!

{ Great...I never copied the images...later... :makepoint: }
