1900 Morgan Dollar with Possible Mint Mark Alteration

I received a 1900 Morgan Silver Dollar from my mom. She said it was my grandfathers. It looks evident it was improperly cleaned but that is not my question. When I look at the mint mark area, it looks like the area has some gouging or defacing the mint mark. Can anyone provide any advice on what the mint mark area looks like or why someone might alter the mint mark?2065063626_1900MorganMintMarkBack.thumb.jpg.cd48aae2b4f8a6002d0ff0898c097aac.jpg330936912_1900MorganMintMarkMM.thumb.jpg.fc0f7ed074103ee6f8c63c343bc4c4b8.jpg1744547765_1900MorganMintMarkFront.thumb.jpg.6b0e7e33f250bf3aacda546fe153452f.jpg

It appears to be simply damage to the coin. There is no economic incentive to alter the mintmark on dollars dated 1900, as there are no keys for that date.

DW Lange has it right on all counts.....your coin just took a random hit in the area where a mint mark would be.
