Picked up this guy because of the toning. 

Weight is 3g checked it four times.

specs for 1974 d stated 3.11g

dial is 19.0 vs 19.05

thickness is 1.4

Variance is +\- .13 grams on these (from 3.11 grams) So it could be 2.98 and still be in tolerance. I don’t think it’s anything special. All coins have a tolerance that anything within that range is considered correct. No way they get them all spot on.

Is the resolution of your scale 1 gram, 0.1 grams, or 0.01 grams.

Assuming the balance is level and calibrated, If you only have 1 gram resolution, your coin could weigh anywhere between 2.5 and 3.4 grams.  With 0.1 resolution, it could weigh any where between 2.95 and 3.04 grams.  0.01 = 2.995 to 3.005 grams.  

Significant figures are important (as emphasized by my freshman chemistry professor Dr Bentz)

All U.S. circulation coins are  "counted" by aggregate weight, not by the piece. This has been normal for most since removal of silver from coins. and for cents and nickels for even more decades. Samples of coins are pulled for weight, diameter and thickness checks, but nothing more.
