Why is my quarter grey? 0

Hello. (I'm obviously an amateur!) This quarter is a greyish color. Wt. 5.5g. Any feedback appreciated. Thank you. Barbara

Corroded. My guess would be it's been in soil or otherwise has sustained adverse chemical reaction. At least it's still worth $0.25 and legal tender.

Heat, oxidation and corrosion. Seawater can do this, too.

Hello NumisMagic and WELCOME to the forum.  Looks like what the other experts here have said, just a corroded post mint damaged coin.  Lots of good info here on this site.  Keep looking!!!

That quarter has been in the ground. I find these metal detecting frequently and they look like this. I do tend to see the crystal like appearance on the obverse when they are in or near water also.
