It will never get a chance to be in a collection but it has a nice home on my desk and when guests or the grandchildren come over they can hold it and see what a 100 year old $1 Dollar coin looks and feels like. I paid book for them no deals this time but I really wanted a couple of MS looking War Nickels. Real nice luster on these, but still hard to believe they graded so high there are still dings and marks. The slab case is 20 years old it has been there from day one I would think. They are in Joe's Garage Holders as a 1943-P MS 63 and a 1944-P MS 60 they are in PCGS look alike holders from Coin World they even stack with a PCGS holder. The dealer is a guy that has been around forever and I think they are real close to what he graded them at I have compared them to my PCGS MS 65 and MS 66 and they look just as good. I’ve seen a few handful of Morgans graded out MS60 , even saw a few PL60 as well … strange grade it’s either high upper AU condition but not good enough to be a MS61 . So I don't think they are from a mint set These are War nickels stamped with a extra large Mint Mark over Monticello with 56% Copper, 35% Silver, 9% Manganese the mint had hopes to collect them back after the war and the large MM would make them more noticeable to gather up ? or so the story goes. The guy who made a bunch counterfeit war nickels back in the 50’s (not just nickels but also dollar bills and other coinage) but he mostly known for counterfeit war nickels … I believe it was a bank teller who found it suspicious he was bringing in a lot nickels with all the same dates . Then feds were on him I heard few different stories one story he dump a bunch nickels in a near by stream they never ever did fully recover them all some can still be found in circulation they are easier to spot due to the large mint mark over the Monticello he forgot to put them “P” on 1944 nickel … he made counterfeit nickels in years 1939, 1944 , 1946 , 1947 and 1953 Edited August 3, 2021 by Jason Abshier Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
