That is one beautiful coin JP

Yes it is beautiful, nice reeded edge not much wear and it has a wonderful mirror type finish to it, to bad that at some point in the last 100 years someone thought it was not quite shiny enough and gave it a good polishing. It will never get a chance to be in a collection but it has a nice home on my desk and when guests or the grandchildren come over they can hold it and see what a 100 year old $1 Dollar coin looks and feels like. So that in itself makes it a great Morgan. The children can hold and feel the wonder and beauty of a time gone by.;)

Good honest wear. Maybe a vey old lightening chemically. I’d be proud to own it. Or rather my son would. I turned the older Lincoln album over to him.

I picked up a couple of War Nickels today may be from a old mint set. I paid book for them no deals this time:nyah: but I really wanted a couple of MS looking War Nickels. Real nice luster on these, but still hard to believe they graded so high there are still dings and marks. Still they are nicer than the old ones I have that are worn out:roflmao: LoL

Even though the 1914 d is damaged by some substance, It is a lot clearer than many of them selling. Very Readable and I managed to get it for $100 which is a real accomplishment with the '14 D

I did find a little green spot on the edge but it looks to dark for PVC damage. The slab case is 20 years old it has been there from day one I would think. Is it anything to worry about or is it time to get the hammer out LoL

I would say that looks like carbon spot it doesn’t look like PVC damage which is more like a blob or crusty  blueish/green to lighter green color on a coin … I wouldn’t crack that out looks normal to me @J P Mashoke

@J P Mashoke  Nice Morgan!  I'm with you on that ASE Type 2 reverse. Guess I'll just have to wait for a Type 3 to come out.

I have a suggestion for your type 3 reverse. 😎 Much better than cropped eagle ase or chicken head age. This is meant with all respect

This is kind of cool. I found that my coin was sold On Heritage Auction not long ago for more than I paid for it. That makes it even more special 9_9 well to me anyway.

I picked up a two more war nickels today to go with my P collection . They are in Joe's Garage Holders as a 1943-P MS 63 and a 1944-P MS 60  they are in PCGS look alike holders from Coin World they even stack with a PCGS holder. The dealer is a guy that has been around forever and I think they are real close to what he graded them at I have compared them to my PCGS MS 65 and MS 66 and they look just as good. Take a look and let me know what you all think ?

I agree with you... to a point.  Then again, if they originated from a mint set, you've done very well.  (In fact, I have never seen an MS-60 assigned any coin in my entire life.)

An interesting conglomeration whose flaws has me completely flummoxed.

I’ve seen a few handful of Morgans graded out MS60 , even saw a few PL60 as well … strange grade it’s either high upper AU condition but not good enough to be a MS61 . Most a 60 looks like it has a lot of contact and distracting bag marks I’ve only seen Morgans in this grade however I haven’t looked at other coins in 60 grade I’m sure every coin series has them

Thanks Quintus,  During the WW2 they stopped making proof sets in 1942 and did not start again until 1950. So I don't think they are from a mint set These are War nickels stamped with a extra large Mint Mark over Monticello with 56% Copper, 35% Silver, 9% Manganese the mint had hopes to collect them back after the war and the large MM would make them more noticeable to gather up ? or so the story goes. Also all of my NGC and PCGS slab coins are MS 60 or higher

Mint sets are made up of circulation strike coins.  Proof sets are made up of Proof struck coins.  The term "mint set" usually refers to circulation strike coin sets.

I stand corrected I said I don't think they are from a mint set because mint sets did not start until 1947 according to the Redbook

Every time  I see war nickels counterfeiter’s named Francis Leroy Henning comes to mind! The guy who made a bunch counterfeit war nickels back in the 50’s (not just nickels but also dollar bills and other coinage) but he mostly known for counterfeit war nickels … I believe it was a bank teller who found it suspicious he was bringing in a lot nickels with all the same dates . Then feds were on him I heard few different stories one story he dump a bunch nickels in a near by stream they never ever did fully recover them all some can still be found in circulation

they are easier to spot due to the large mint mark over the Monticello he forgot to put them “P” on 1944 nickel … he made counterfeit nickels in years 1939, 1944 , 1946 , 1947 and 1953
