As I continuously try to organize my coin problem, I mean collection, I have a lot of things I stick to the side. After a while the pile of odds and ends with little value gets bigger and bigger. A thought came to me to put a smile on a kids face, encourage the hobby, and declutter I should pay it forward. I assume others are in the same position.
 

Here is my proposal...if anyone has a child, grandchild, neighbor or any kid who has a special event (birthday, Christmas, etc) and you think would have interest in numismatics post it on this thread. Until my stash runs dry I will mail them a starter set of a few coins. It won’t be anything of much value to sell, but will be great coins for them to start looking at and researching. If others want to participate let us know.

Very nice offer. Potential recipients should think about how these coins might be used to educate kids.

This is a very generous proposal. I am sure long term collectors have duplicates and stashed coins that could be given up to help young children get excited about collecting coins. I would participate in this kind of endeavor. This would have my strong support. Congratulations on a novel idea that is needed to inspire interest.

Agreed Ray! And selfishly who wouldn’t feel like they got some real value out of making a kids day? These items, whether it be worn buffalos or Indian head pennies, would bring us little to no monetary value. But for me at least thinking I made a kid happy and excited would bring me a lot of value.

We as a group see family collectors on this forum mention the enjoyment they get trying to get their children excited about coins and the collecting there of. Some affluent collectors and some with less ability to get something for their children. All those people that we see are trying to get children interested. Like you said it it doesn't have to be a best in class coin but something to move them. We could pick people from their posts or however we wanted to. My only concern would be trolling by people who see an opportunity but to make a child gain interest I would be willing to take that risk. If I had not been gifted a coin at the ripe old age of 8 I my never had known the joy of coins and collecting. I already have someone in mind that probably would be my first choice. I have said this before but I have never sold one coin in my life but I have given to children and occasionally adults when I see something that could excite them to the coin realm. Set it in motion and I am in. If you want me to go first say but the word. We don't have to post what or to whom we give and the recipient does not have to post if they choose not to. I would not participate to gain likes or recognition as I prefer anonymity in these matters but anyone can do what they want. (Free will and free choice ) My opinion.

If anyone has a child in mind, PM me the name and address. As I get messages I will pass around to Ray and others in a round robin to mail to the kids, and I’ll start with the first one. This way addresses are kept semi-private and not in the larger forum for trollers.

This is a wonderful start. Perhaps we have all to soon forgotten ProfHaroldHill randon act of kindness at Christmas and the inspiration we saw with his grandsons exceptional vision to give beyond the initial giveaway. Lets all carry on this concept and take advantage of an opportunity to touch a Childs life in coins. Thank you for your inspiration Woods020.

I will post something on this thread once everyday so it stays in the window of visibility and does not get lost three or four pages back mostly because I believe this will work.

That is very generous of you. A very special person on this forum gave my kids some coins and they really enjoyed them a whole lot. They have been looking at them almost everyday and been looking up coins like them on their phones. And have been researching them. That really helps children. I've witnessed it with my own eyes. It's good to get them into hobbies such as collecting. It helps keep them off the games and things such as that. That's so great my friend. You are a good person.

As I promised here is the daily post to keep this thread up front and alive.  You see Hoghead515's children have been touched and a great testament to the fact that this thread could move so many other children. Look at the reactions. In the next few days I will make my decision and proceed with furthering this thread. Again I thank Woods020 for posing this great idea. Please follow his lead.

Wanting to keep this thread on the top of the listings because I believe it has merit. Children are special little creatures. Collectors need to inspire children and this is a good place to start. IMO

Yes sir. I agree with ya. Them little ones is what life's all about. Love to see them all get into a hobby like this. They can learn some valuable life lessons. And also maybe keep them off drugs if they got a hobby they are into.

If you guys follow my journals you know I have two young boys that I'm trying to share the love of this with. I've been following this but I'd hate to take from this because I have a multi-generational, multi-national collection of coins to pass to them as it is.

Revenant, I read most of what you post and enjoy most of it. In this case I think you may have missed the intent. I feel I know Ben. I see you as a dedicated Family man. It is admirable that you, like many collectors, are leavening coins to your boys. That is not the same. My willingness to participate in this idea was not to make long time collectors inspired. I would like it to be something  to create a coin story for a young collector. Maybe an example of a relatively random unknown person that gave something to them that was not expected or inherited. You would not be taking from this as it is freely given. My choices are made solely from postings on this forum, all parents with potential future collectors are in that mix. Maybe as the child grows they remember it and they are inspired in life and not just in collecting. If I am understand your post you feel you would be taking away from someone else when in fact it may be denying a gifter the pleasure of attempting to help you inspire your children, regardless of what you will leave them. I am just trying to explain why I am participating and I hope I have not posted anything here that could be misinterpreted. The gifter chooses not the recipient. Just my opinion.

This is exactly what this thread is all about and still Only Woods020 and I have stated the same thing let us know or wait for us to choose. We are still wanting as many long term collectors to share to inspire all young collectors.

My youngest son is finally starting to get inspired. USMC Ray had a whole lot to do with that. That was very great and I can't thank you enough. He's got himself a handful now he keeps locked in his safe. He's been beating me to the change to look through it now. It makes me so happy now He's getting into the hobby. I want to thank you very much for that Ray. I truly mean that very much. It truly works if they get some coins gifted from a stranger more than from a parent. I don't know why but it was the case for my youngest son. My oldest was already getting into the hobby. I had been trying to inspire my youngest. He loves his hoard he calls it. He's also got some gemstones he keeps locked in it to. He finally got his first wheat penny back in change from a store the other day with some of his own money spent.

Sorry I'm slow to respond on this but life is a bit crazy and I have a lot of balls in the air. But I'll circle back on this.
