I just bought this for my son for 20$. It's a silver peso. Did I get ripped??

more or less, yes....melt value today approx $9.88....plus its heavily circulated n cleaned....

Rather expensive as a bullion buy, however if you like the design and perhaps more importantly if he does it might sow the seed of collecting these.   If that becomes the case then it could be money well spent.   If you notice on the obv these show the silver content .720 silver, so while the size of a Morgan dollar these have much less silver content and thus have a lower melt value.

You can find some of the earlier Mexican pesos at good prices. Designs are attractive and make a nice introduction to "crown size" silver coins.
