Training to become professional grader?

Hello:

Wondering if there exists a formal process (apprenticeship, educational regime, etc) for one to obtain "certification" as a professional "Coin Grader"?

Also, as we reside (literally) across the planet from you, we most certainly would support a more "localized service" here in NZ :)

Are there opportunities (id est, franchise, etc) available to initiate/found an NCG "branch office" here in Auckland NZ, or Sydney AUS?

Thanks kindly,

Ted

Hello,

There is no formal process to become a grader. Just years of practice or as a coin dealer. The closest thing would be the ANA's Summer Seminar, which offers excellent programs on counterfeit detection and grading, some of which are taught by NGC graders.

You could also apply to become an NGC authorized dealer.

Much appreciated, Paul.  Know the, "...years of practice.." routine (spent a decade+ in medical training and much of what we "learned", we did so via repetition and simple brutal exposure).

Again, thanks.

All the best,

Ted

About your coin grader journey, it's awesome that you're looking for a formal process. From what I've gathered, some folks opt for apprenticeships or specific educational routes to get certified. It might be worth checking out hrdf training options—they often have solid programs. As for a local branch, that's a neat idea! Imagine having a cozy NCG spot right here in Auckland or Sydney. Have you considered reaching out to Training Asia for insights? They could have tips on starting something in your neck of the woods. Plus, the more localized, the better, right?
