Columbian Half Reference in Movie 0

Last night TCM ran a number of early Laurel and Hardy comedies, one of which was the 1927 silent two-reeler Putting Pants on Philip. The opening title card references the 1892-93 Columbian Half Dollar, a coin of which many thousands were dumped into circulation. This confirms that enough remained 30 years later that the public would be expected to get the joke.

But --- did Philip find his pants?

Well, Uncle Piedmont (Oliver Hardy) tried to get his kilted Scottish nephew Philip (Stan Laurel) to wear pants, but without success. This is one of the very first L&H comedies, and they hadn't yet assumed the Stan & Ollie characters we've come to love.

Found a bank holiday era letter where the woman writing said the only cash she had  were a souvenir Columbian half and quarter. She wanted to know if they were real money.

There is a lot of quality in those old one-reelers. As a kid, my Dad and I would get up early on Sunday and watch L&H and other silents and talkies on TV. It was the only time they were shown - mostly as filler for otherwise dead air time.

I like those old shows. Any more all the newer shows on TV are plumb filth. We watch alot of them with our kids when they aren't on the cartoons.

I need to go back to watching those myself.  I used to make it a point to view an old silent reel about once a week.

I worded that a little bit wrong. Lol. We watch the older TV shows on. A whole lot of Little House on the Prairie  and stuff like that. Cant hardly watch the new shows. Some of them are plum vulgar for little ones to see.
