Is CoinTalk.com a scam?

@Coinbuf what value does cointalk.com provide to the numismatic community?

I am Grant Powell, and as you scroll past Wikipedia, Merriam, APMEX, etc., you will see that "I come up as the first person on Google" - usually on page 1, sometimes on page 2 (depending on what region you are searching from).

I did not make any statement about if or not coin talk provides any value to the coin collecting community; as I said I am not a member there nor do I spend time lurking there.  How do you measure what each forum; here, PCGS, coin talk, and any other; provides?  I think that each individual will make the assessment on if one or multiple forums provide him/her any knowledge or value biased on the individual needs and wants.  I know of many people that do not find the PCGS forum a good use of their time and the opposite can be said of this forum, however I cannot say that I have ever seen anyone on either of those two forums (even banned members of one) call one or the other a scam.

I have been a member on CT for quite a while now. Never had any problems.  Quite a few members from here and ATS venture there also.

So have I and I haven't had any problems either.  Also, I have had many good coin and paper money experiences while there.

I guess I'd better pay more attention when I'm on that site.

Once Doug decides he doesn’t like you, you WILL be targeted for banning. It may take awhile, but it WILL happen.

How many of you would be interested a better-managed coin forum, eh? Or do you feel that NGC and ATS offer everything the coin community needs?

I think that up until now, this has been “the answer”. Unfortunately, there is presently an active threat by THIS site’s management to make it more like CoinTalk, and that is not only a bad idea, but a tragedy.

So, yeah, stay tuned and stay ready. You may be needed soon. I have a “boomer” attitude that doesn’t blend well with snowflakeism.

NGC has always been far better when it comes to leniency than any other forum I've been on. They may have just refreshed the rules lately as we have been getting members that at times have gone over the edge. The rules were brought up to just try to reign in some of the people getting outside the lines. If anyone gets banned, I believe it will be for a very good reason!

It seems to me NGC has a choice to make. Take the newly renewed activity that is undeniably here now and accept the risk of occasionally “edgy” posts, or remain forever mired in the status of Sleepy Hollow. They get to pick, and I get to vote with my metaphorical feet. Not a threat, a promise. We have one too many CoinTalks already. NGC needs to find a way to serve the unserved community of non-YouRube misled coin enthusiasts.

This has been Sleepy Hollow for the over 14 yrs I've been here and they are still here with knowledgeable members who contribute greatly to keeping this forum alive. I like it as it is. We don't get lost in the misc stuff that lives ATS. We get a few rocky members here and there, as does every other forum does, and most get tired and leave. The one's that get use to this place are the one's that grow respect for the members and stay to become respected member themselves.

Well I am the MOST “liked” poster here for the past month, 2nd for the past year (365 days), and 3rd all time. Not too shabby, eh? Yet somehow Jason dislikes me intensely. Whose problem is that, he asks rhetorically?

CT has its own "vibe" and some very knowledgeable members just like all the other sites.  Not everyone fits with the culture in all forums.  I wasn't a fan of the place and I found a couple other forums more to my liking.  To each his own as the saying goes.  OP sounds like he ruffled the wrong feathers in some way and got the boot - rightly or wrongly.  Or possibly there is a back story and history that we are only getting one side of.

Not to shabby at all.  (thumbsu  Sarcasm and witty remarks go a long way to getting likes not necessarily respect as it relates to subject matter.  One I will hit like more often than the other.

What is your username over there @G_P?  I want to see what you said that got you banned.

You won't be able to see what I said because my posts were removed. I was answering questions related to people asking what their coins are worth - I am somewhat of a specialist in coin valuation: https://numismag.com/en/2020/10/19/experts-word-grant-powell-numiis-modern-tools-for-coins-valuation/

Makes me wonder (since we can not see the posts) if you stepped on toes by providing a LOW value on a coin others (or the coin owner) thought should have a HIGH value and had paid a large amount for.

Unless you appropriately (in his mind) sufficiently genuflected every time Doug the Chief Moderator typed His "Great Indisputable Knowledge and Wisdom From On High", you got banned for that alone, regardless of what anyone here or elsewhere says. Truth.

I just might be the biggest critic of CoinTalk you will EVER encounter. It is not a scam. It is a legit site. That said, it is owned by, and moderated by, some of the most active self-gluteal osculatory people you will ever find. It is a clique of personalities. Their moderation is heavy-handed, inconsistent in application, and not subject to appeal or protest. Kiss the rump of management all the time and you’ll be fine. They surely do for one another.

[That's an awful lot of rhetorical flash-bangs there, VKurtB!  After a presumably comprehensive background check, I was accepted as a member at CT, so how heavily moderated can it be?  Then again, I won't really know until I summon the courage to speak up over there.  Either way, it doesn't look very promising.  Thing is, no one has a right to post anywhere. It is a privilege which can either be denied at the outset or revoked. This Forum makes that crystal clear in its Guidelines. I can play nice here, (DINA's Law) or go play elsewhere. Fair enough.]

Bet.  If anyone asks I will tell them you extended an invitation, which I accepted, and I subsequently decided to stick around. 😉
