Graded Coins btw

So I found these quarters in a roll of other silver quarters. And I never graded coins before so what the heck. Here’s what I got back. Not disappointed in the least. A novice like me had no idea 2 were laundered. Lol

They were worth their silver content before they were graded and they're worth their silver content, now that they've been graded.

Why did you get them graded?

Is there a reason you have posted the same coins on three different forums?  It doesn't really change anything.

I'll guess it is because he wanted to show his coins to different people.

I'll guess he is a novice and thought they were high grade.   I suggest every collector both new and long-time send a few of their coins in for grading to see how they are doing.  Doing this often saves a big disappointment in the future.

True I thought the coins were typically better than average so as a 1st time submission at 17 bucks a coin. I spent more on KENO.

Now you have something for comparison before sending more coins, AND before buying coins. Maybe it is a cheap lesson....?

exactly.....What baffles me at this point......the cleaned slab (002) and the ms 62 are identical .......so why one is one and not two being the same?either all 3 would be cleaned or two of the 3 ms 62.......I had these coins under a loop before submitting.....and the one thing that didn't even make the core printing was the obverse of one had minor doubling. Don't get me wrong I'm satisfied with the results, and as you said Now I have a comparison guide if you will.

Even if the coins looked the same to you, in the opinion of NGC, two of them have been cleaned. If you’re proficient at evaluating coins, you won’t usually need magnification to determine whether a coin has been cleaned
Also, unless a coin is a major variety and/or submitted under a variety tier, something like minor doubling won’t be noted on the grading label.

(002,003) were submitted with a mint error submission so they were totally inspected and the results are in.....I hope the election doesn't go this way,lol

For understanding purposes, a mint error is different than a variety.

NGC Mint Error articles:

https://www.ngccoin.com/news/article/7855/

https://www.ngccoin.com/news/article/7988/learn-grading-mint-errors-part-4/

NGC Variety article:

https://www.ngccoin.com/variety-plus/what-is-a-variety/

Doubling would fall under the variety category but would need to be a recognized variety.  For NGC & US Coins that's generally limited to what they have on their Variety Plus listings pages.

Other sources for variety listings are here:

Lincoln Cent Resource - http://www.lincolncentresource.com/Top50.html

Variety Vista / CONECA - http://www.varietyvista.com/index.htm

Wexler's Doubled Die - https://doubleddie.com/

I don't recall offhand if NGC offers a Variety Research & Attribution service but for certain ANACS (another grading & certification compan) does.  This can be useful if you have a coin that has multiple varieties with little difference between them.

Point being was, a close look was being used

The true value of this thread is as a "Don't let this happen to you" lesson. Many new collectors see things that aren't real, and miss things that are. The ONLY remedy is to NOT rush into getting coins graded. Get some experience looking at tens of thousands of coins first.

Now there's a place Ratzie33 can send his phenomenal discovery to! Great scholarship!

Wait. I STILL don’t get it. You submitted them as a mint error? WHAT conceivable mint error? There obviously is NOT one. Do you even understand the entire CONCEPT of a mint error? The evidence here suggests not.

A coin being “different” is not enough. Further, it never has been and it never will be. It has to match EXACTLY a previously documented error type or variety. Variety hunting is not some free-form expressive activity.
