Hi new here... I’ve searched exhaustively for this error but can’t seem to find it anywhere....is it a double strike or double die?

On the reverse of this 1942 dime the T & E in States appears to be an error?

Welcome to the forum.

It appears that your coin is damaged, and not a mint error. It looks like something hit it after it was struck, and dented the letters ATE&S. It also looks like it (or something else) might have gotten OF & A.

Welcome

It is not always important to know what caused the damage as sometimes unless you were there at the time, you may never know. What is important is to know if it could have happened during the striking of the coin which is the only way an error can occur. In this case it could not have happened at that time so it is some sort of damage.
