Can plastic holders hurt the finish of certain coins?

Modern coin holders, including flips, 2x2s, and hard plastic holders,  are supposed to be inert. Some older flips are known to contain PVC, which can be harmful to a coin's surface. If a holder smells like a shower curtain, it probably contains PVC.

I'm not sure what the "long run" is, but I can tell you that I have had coins in inert plastic for 30+ years that look exactly the same as they did when they were put in the holders.
