Odd looking Lincoln penny

Curious to hear opinions on this penny I found in pocket change. Its color is gray/pewter and it has what looks like doubling with raised bumps in sort of a vertical streak. I've never seen anything like it. Is it counterfeit or some strange error?

Welcome to the Forum

It looks to me like the copper plating has been removed. Maybe somebody doing a science experiment.

Actually, raised bumps under the copper plating are very common on 1982 and later cents.
