Hi,

I have many coin albums and rolls of coins that were passed down to my family.
Just to pass the time I have been looking through the rolls to find the missing coins in each album. I have also been replacing some of the coins in the albums with nicer looking coins that I have been finding in the rolls.
At first I thought it was a good idea to replace them and now I’m starting to question this idea.
Should I just leave the old coins alone or replace them like I have been doing?

If you're pressing them in with your bare fingers, the coins most subject to surface damage from skin oil are already being damaged anyway, so no big worry. The sulfur from the albums will also mess them up, it's true, but they are already being messed up by the fingers.

If you on the other hand are seriously collecting a high-quality set of Washington quarters, you're defeating your own purpose by damaging their quality as you go. I would put them instead into labeled flips which go into album pages in a notebook, and I would handle all but the well-worn with some form of protection.

We all grew up with Whitmans, but they are obsolete for serious collectors.
