1804 Silver Dollar Coin Real? Fake?
1 1

12 posts in this topic

I stumbled across this coin and I’m sure I’m probably one of the thousands of others who have a “fake” but before I go waste my time and gas, I was hoping I could get some advice from someone who knows what to look for and if you would think it would even be worth my time or smart to take this in somewhere being that it has more similarities to an actual specimen than differences!?!? Thanks

This coin is a fake, a very poorly executed one.

On the reverse:

The eagles head is too small

The wings are too thin

On the obverse;

The date is 1804 there are only 15 of this date and they are all accounted for

Liberty's head and profile are totally wrong and her nose is too big

There are numerous other tells but theses are glaringly bad

You are so correct.  Only takes about .5 seconds to see this is a bad fake.

[Unsolicited Editorial Comment... This old thread only confirms what I have known all along. The OP asked a simple question, and got a helpful detailed answer.  None of the respondents caved in to the notion that providing a critique of a coin would somehow assist "the counterfeiters," an entity bigger than life, in producing a better product. That is a fanciful notion that may sound good, but has no basis in fact. It is nice to see good old common sense  prevails.]    🐓

Uhmmmm..... this is a coin collector message board. It is therefore "common cents" not "common sense" that prevails.

;)

Because it is a old very bad fake.  The counterfeiters are already well beyond the point where discussing the shortcomings of this piece will help them.
