Sometimes the surface of a die is damaged, often when the obverse and reverse dies come together without a planchet between them (called a die clash.) When this happens, the mint workers will grind or polish the surface, removing enough metal to eliminate the damaged area. This sometimes results in parts of the design being abraded off. Notice how the roof of the Memorial seems to be floating in the air? That is because that is one of the shallowest parts of the design, so it is the first part to be removed. The same is true for the designer's initials. Some people collect these, but I don't think they bring much of a premium, since the demand is not high, and the supply seems endless, especially for '69 and '70 dated cents.
