What makes a coin variety?

I recently bought several rolls of mint 1996 Kennedy half dollars. When I received the shipment one of the rolls was broken.

At first glace I thought that some hade gotten scratched but upon looking closer I find that all of them have an identical mark.

I have two rolls of these and wonder if they aren't an unrecognized variety.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Your photo is a little blurry, but the line appears to be raised, which would make it a scratch in the die. While interesting, it's not the sort of thing collectors typically seek as a variety. NGC would not attribute it as such.
