Hello All! Something to note, some marks are simply typical worn die marks and does not typically result in a known error, as this is common with dies reducing in structural and surface integrity due to heavy impact and stress the die endures in it's regular life! In some cases before quality control catches fast and few a few get through! Also in a coin from the era you posted fractioning and cutting/chopping of a coin by vendors shopkeepers and citizens was common! Hence the Trime 3 cent dime 3 cent nickel these were minted as others were being chopped or melted into objects of period use that was more suitable of the time and at the moment such as a musket ball bushing shirt button or trousers! Errors did occur and things were repurposed a little more. Could be a real genuine error could be just a very cool price of history! Your eyes have the best view. Hope this helps.

In 1853, $0.25 was an hour's pay. If you melted a quarter down to make a shirt button, that would be a very expensive button.
