There is nothing wrong with buying an ungraded coin, if you know what you are doing, and have the experience and knowledge to choose an example that is free of problems, or, barring that, you are able to buy from a trusted source. Not only are there plenty of counterfeits out there, but there are also lots of coins that have been messed with: cleaned, dipped, puttied, rubbed, etc.

The grading services are not perfect, but they do add another layer of protection. Buying a slabbed coin doesn't necessarily guarantee that the coin is original and "un-messed-with," but it may lessen the chances.
