1948 wheat penny die clash mule or mule with what coin?

That is not a mule but is a damaged coin. It's only value is the copper content.

Where did you get the idea it was a mule coin?

A real mule  is a coin that was struck from two dies that were not meant for each other,

such as a 1966 Obverse struck with a 1967 Reverse. Not noticeable unless you compared

both sides to one another.

How I came to the conclusion that this was probably a Die Clash Mule ( not mule ). Here is an image (attached) of how this coin should read (pardon I don't know the exact font used on US Coins for this era but did my best rep). The orange letters is what the 1948 wheat back penny should read like. The blue arrows point to the different images, letters/numbers that have been imaged (however it happened) on/above/below the surface of this coin. Now, what screams out to you that any of the images pointed to in blue on the coin belong to this particular year 1948 wheat back? not to mention the Obv. Its not just damage, as you can see, there are letters and/or numbers (exact and south) where ONE CENT should be, and there is some sort of image/s punched all over where the letters in orange belong. I do understand a mule, and I do understand a die clash mule, here is a description and example of a die clash mule (or rather mule clash die "either way"): http://www.maddieclashes.com/1857-flying-eagle-cent-clashed-with-a-1857-seated-liberty-quarter-dollar/ IF this was simply damage, one would just see damage. But I see images and letters or numbers all over this coin = Mule Die Clash. Am I wrong? Anyone care to comment? I would love to have some seasoned feedback :)

That coin is definitely heavily damaged......I'd say that your coin is the most heavily damaged LWC I've ever seen.  Not an error, just damaged.

Ok guys :) Thank you for all your feedback! If this is just damage, how does this type of damage happen? And, how does damage leave images? I'm not new at collecting.. I've only recently pulled out my hoard of coins and decided to figure out whats what, what means what, and how it all works. I really appreciate all your help!

I honestly cannot tell you what caused that kind of heavy damage.  It looks like someone took some kind of a tool to it and scraped it up like crazy.  I'm unsure of what you mean about damage leaving images...I don't see any images in the damage on the cent.  Somehow, the coin was severely scraped up.

Wow jgrinz, are you insinuating I did this to this coin on purpose?.. I'm not that creative.

No insinuation that YOU did it, just that SOMEONE did it on purpose.  To which I concur.

Thank you for the backing for my sometimes answers that need more elaboration.
