1944 Penny. There is a little dot after “Penny”......KG above the tail. And Initials HP under the guys head. Is this a rare coin?

Nott rare at all. Just a regular penny worth about 15 cents in that condition.

The little dot appears on many of these pennies, It is the MM for the Perth Mint

with over 28 Million minted.

The "guy" is King George VI and the initials HP stand for T.H. Paget, the designer of the Obverse

On the reverse the initial KG stand for G. Kruger-Grey, the designer of the Reverse.

I hope not.

It's time to tell a really dirty secret: common foreign coins can be the best margin in the store, from a dealer standpoint. If they pay a nickel for them in bulk, and put them in the assortment can for 15c or 20c, the profit is large. In some cases they might put them out to sell for 50c in a flip. The time spent doing the work of stapling and labeling is more valuable than the coin and flip, but if they invest 10c and reap 50c, I think that's great margin.

For one at a time, I understand it. However, if you buy a lot or keep coming back, and you are never offered a discount, feel free to hold it against the dealer. I would. Some will say that this is bad and mean, that it's always up to you to ask for it. I think it's always up to the dealer to price competitively, and to take care of good customers, and that if the dealer doesn't offer you something after a time, that is the dealer's choice and you aren't obligated to counsel him.

My Dad was in Australia during WWII and brought back a number of those big Pennys.  I wish I still had them.
