What does “sms” stand for?

Thanks,

Bruce

Hi Bruce,

SMS stands for Special Mint Set.  From 1965 to 1967, the US Mint suspended production and sales of both uncirculated mint sets and proof sets as it attempted to cope with a coin shortage and the changeover from 90% silver dimes, quarters and halves to clad dimes and quarters and 40% silver halves.  In place of mint and proof sets, the US Mint offered Special Mint Sets, which were something of a hybrid between a mint and a proof set.  The 1965 special mint sets are mostly similar to mint sets, though some scarce 1965 SMS coins that are very proof like can be found.  The 1966 sets were more of a true hybrid between business strikes and proofs and the 1967 sets were almost true proofs.  In 1968, uncirculated mint sets and proof sets came back.  However, this wasn't the final end to the SMS designation.  From 2005-2010, the US Mint changed the composition of the mint sets.  Instead of simply being composed to regular business strike coins, they were comprised of specially prepared coins which the US Mint called Satin Finish.  In grading these coins, NGC and PCGS use the term SMS to differentiate them from the regular business strikes which were struck and released in circulation.

As always, I hope this helps!
