1972 quarter like new not a scratch on it is it worth anything?

Well, whatever it might have been worth, the value won't be improved by it being thumbed. But neither will it drop very much. It's worth $0.25.

Agreed.....face value on that one.  They made hundreds of millions of 1972 quarters at both mints, and mint state examples are still extremely common thanks to Mint Sets.  This situation in unlikely to ever change.  But JKK is right......you really should hold coins the way you are in that list picture.  If you had a valuable coin, placing your thumb and finger on the obverse and reverse would have damaged the value for sure.
