1694 Ireland William and Mary Halfpenny (odd edge)

2 posts in this topic

I recently acquired a decent example of a 1694 William and Mary Irish halfpenny. This coin has very pleasing surfaces, but the edge is a bit odd. From what few resources I have at my disposal it appears that this coin is only known with a milled edge. Although it appears some of the edge material is missing or has “flaked” off a small portion remains that shows the milled edge. The areas where the edge material is not prevalent shows a plain edge. Although a little lighter in color compared to the rest of the coin, these areas have even consistent color. Perhaps suggesting this something occurred some time ago. Any ideas as to what may have caused this? It is somewhat visible in the pictures (still using my book stack and iPhone to take pictures so I apologize for the quality). I will be happy to post more pictures if needed.

According to Spink, this coin should weigh between 106 and 116 grains (6.86 to 7.5 grams) with a diameter of 25mm. My coin weighs in at 105.55 (6.84 grams) and with a diameter of 25mm. Given those specs and the relatively low value of the coin, I do not suspect it to be a forgery. I am still somewhat puzzled by the edge. Perhaps a more experienced member could shed some light?

The weight is pretty close to normal, so i don't suspect this to be a common, contemporary counterfeit. It really doesn't look like one either. The edge has begun to crumble due to environmental damage. This piece was likely dug up somewhere.
