I found this penny and was wondering if it is the real deal or not. If it is what would be my next step? Can anyone help me please?

Hi Diana,

Welcome to the forum!  I have some bad news for you though.......that's a 1982-D Large Date, not a Small Date. 

Here's where you can see photos which will show you the difference:
