GRADES ADDED! GTG post for my recent world submission

I understand that it can be very difficult to guestimate a grade from online pictures and that world coins be particularly difficult due to the lack of well-established comparison pieces, but I wanted to try to judge interest in starting a guess the grade post for my recent world submission. I remember when there was a specific section devoted to GTG and it was one of my favorite parts of the chat boards because you were able to learn what factors some of the more experienced members (e.g. Mark Feld) weighed the most when evaluating a coin. Not to mention it is always nice to see what other people are interested in! If interested in participating in a GTG thread please comment “yes” below and I will do my best to post decent quality pictures. I have included a table with the year, country, and variety information so you know what kind of coins I would be including in the GTG.

You’re more than welcome. It’s more so just for fun. I should have the results from NGC in the next couple of days. I’ll try to find time to post the pictures tomorrow.

I hope you will post some images.There are a few world coins I've been looking for. As for grading yours, I'm not confident I could make a reasonable guess.

Hello everyone! Happy Thanksgiving! I apologize for the delay in this post. These are the best pictures I have available. I have done my best to label each picture with the number that corresponds to the chart above. Some of these coins were grade "fillers" so if you feel as though a details grade is warranted or if the coin looks odd please say so. No feelings will be hurt. I like tejas' guesses, but #2 looks original to me and #7 looks like it has been cleaned along with its other problems.

I have experience with 18th century British coinage. While the pictures are not ideal, but from what I can see, this is what I would guess:

1) MS62

2) MS64

4) XF45

7) VF Details (Cleaned, Scratched)

I am so pleased that more people than expected made their estimations! I also submitted a 1797 British penny. This coin had a few spots so I sent it to NCS. As soon as that coin moves through NGC I will post grades for them all. I have attached pictures of the 1797 penny below. Feel free to leave your guess for that coin as well.

I checked my submission status this morning and the grades are in! I want to thank everyone for participating. I really enjoyed reading through the comments. Next time I will post better quality images. As if grading from a picture on the internet wasn’t hard enough.

Overall, I am happy with the grades. I purchased all these coins raw and did my best to pick decent examples, so it is nice to see that I did not do too bad. The table below displays both my estimates as well as the actual grades assigned by NGC. I have broken down my thoughts on each coin and the assigned grade.

1. This coin is absolutely stunning in hand. The pictures I posted are washed out and blurry, but this coin has great eye appeal. As it turns out, this is the only uncirculated example at NGC.

2. I was a bit surprised to see this coin get the BN designation. In hand, there is a fair amount of red left. I had originally designated this as an RB, but I believe the technical grade is right on.

3. This coin was a nice reward. I had some difficulty tracking down a nice example that was not completely worn down. I believe the grade is fitting for this coin.

4. I had originally graded this as a 55, but after looking at my pictures and reading my notes I am not surprised this warranted a 50 grade.

5. I for whatever reason never took pictures of this coin. I had based my grade partially off how I judged the 1682 (#3) so I am a little surprised this received a F-15 grade. Regardless I am excited to get it back in hand so that I can learn.

6. Again no picture for this coin either. I submitted this coin for two reasons. The first of which was because it is a better variety “GVLIEMVS” and second because I was trying to use the entirety of my grading credit. Although the variety is not listed on the holder (not sure if NGC attributes it) I am very pleased with the grade.

7. I purchased this coin a whim. I did not know what to expect when it arrived in the mail. After looking at in hand I could tell it had a slew of issues (cleaned, scratched, rim damage) but I thought it was interesting. I can not say I am either surprised or disappointed.

8. I added this coin to the thread last minute, so I am not sure many even got a chance to look it over. I had graded it a 63 and I thought I had done so conservatively. I did submit this coin to NCS so it is possible that the conservation effort revealed some additional characteristics that impacted the grade. I am a little surprised but far from disappointed.

I think the majority of the issue is with the quality of my pictures. Looking back at them now I am even more impressed with the guesses.

I'm wondering if the 1804 is actually a contemporary counterfeit.

Irish coinage in general has several very interesting rarities. It can be rewarding adventure to collect them.
