Tagged Ear Silver Coin variety - South Africa

11 posts in this topic

Hi NGC

Over the last decade, several known South Africa Numismatists have written about the 1966 silver one Rand 'tagged ear' variety.

In the accompanying pictures illustrated, you will notice that one of the Springboks ear appear to be shorter, folded  - commonly referred to as having been 'tagged'.

I'd like to request that the NGC grading professional Masters please consider the inclusion of the 1966 silver Rand 'Tagged ear' variety that are well documented in several South Africa numismatic journals and price catalogs, namely:

  •  MTB NUMISMATIC POCKET GUIDE - SOUTH AFRICA COINAGE 1874 – 2000 by DR. Morgan Carroll (Free Printed book sent through to NGC Graders via Max Spiegel early in 2018)
  • NOTES ON THE COINAGE OF THE SOUTH AFRICAN REPUBLIC by J.T. Becklake
  • HISTORY OF THE NICKEL COINS OF SOUTH AFRICA by F. Malan
  • HERN’S HANDBOOK ON SOUTH AFRICAN COINS AND PATTERNS by B. Herns
  • GELD IN SUID-AFRIKA by C.L. Engelbrecht

I know of several collectors who have written and even paid additional fees to have the 'Tagged ear' variety of the 1966 Silver one Rand recognized.

Can NGC Graders please review and include the variety for the benefit of all South Africa Numismatists.

Are you able to supply a photo of the standard issue coin as well as the variety so that we can compare the two? Please feel free to email them to me directly.

Hi Matt

Firstly, thank you for your kind efforts with regards to the 'Tagged Ear' silver one Rand variety assistance. All South Africa Collectors are holding their breath and awaiting the positive news that NGC Graders have included the variety in their grading designation.

More on the topic of varieties - there are other South Africa coin varieties such as the pregnant Springbok, various GEO V pennies not having a dot next to the date or a missing dot etc.

These varieties are all well noted in the new MTB coin book (2018-20) as well as some varieties listed in the Hern's handbook and other older coin publications on South Africa coinage.

Despite the long history of information on our coin varieties the NGC Graders still seem hesitant to list these collectable varieties.

If the Graders require additional information and photos would you object if several of our known South Africa Numismatists send information on these varieties to you?
