As a Washington collector, I was closely following this set as it sold.  I was amazed at some of the prices these things brought.  Was anyone else following it?  I posted a few highlights below...

1932P MS67: $23K!!

I was completely amazed by the 1932 p, as $23k is a lot of money for a coin that is worth just over $300 in 65 gem.  The coin was no doubt original but, although the toning was decent; I didn't find it that eye appealing.  However, the NGC price guide puts it at $41500 in 67 ( an enormous leap), so maybe it was a really good deal after all.

Of the two coins pictured, I like the 1935-S a lot more than the 1932.  I don't care for the toning on the latter coin.

Financially, I would far prefer to be the seller than the buyer at these prices.

The PCGS population for a 35-S in MS-67 is 60 and for NGC it is 37.  Heritage sold a 67+ CAC for $1680 earlier this year.  So presumably the premium must be for the toning, not the grade or the sticker.

The 1932 has a population of seven at PCGS and four at NGC in this grade.  Heritage last sold a PCGS 67 CAC for $28,200 in 2016.  This example is also toned though it's a personal preference which one is better.

Probably also gradeflation and some duplicates in both numbers, as the 1932 PCGS count went from four at the time of the last Heritage sale to seven now.

Lastly, longer term I expect this series to continue to lose value, as it has since the end of the SQ program.

Much as I enjoy Washingtons, I'm glad I'm not into those coins at those prices...
