Post your favorite coin purchase of 2017

It's hard to believe, but 2017 is almost entirely in the rear view mirror. Post your favorite coin purchase of the year. Here's mine, a (PCGS) VF30 Flowing Hair $1.

This would be an auction I went to last summer.  There were many British coins in this particular auction, many desirable, that were in Whitman albums, or, sold individually.  I kick myself for not buying a Whitman full of Maundy money that was mostly Victorian, and had beautiful old album toning.  Sold very cheap in hindsight.  Unfortunately, I was really winging it with values, rarity, as there were so many British coins, and I never collected these, although I did research as much as I could the night before auction.

There was another Whitman folder I missed, a Victoria type set all in mostly BU, with a few in AU condition.  That sold for almost a tenth of it's value in hindsight...I know where it's at, and I've been bugging the owner for it since!  ;)

Everyone went home happy which is what it's all about I suppose.  Here's some of my purchases.  Spent less than 4 Bennies....$400.

My favorite from 2017.

1803/2 $5 BD-2, R.5, MS61 NGC. Bass-Dannreuther Die State d/c. This late die state shows a bisecting crack on the reverse from the U in UNITED, through the eagle's beak, to the E in STATES. Light field chatter slightly subdues semiprooflike mirroring, but no major abrasions are noticed. The left side of the shield and the eagle's left (facing) talons exhibit strike weakness. On the obverse, bold strike doubling is visible on all relief elements. BD-2 is the rarest of the 1803 half eagle die varieties, with only 40 to 50 pieces believed known. Uncirculated examples, such as this eye-appealing piece, are in demand.

Nothing in comparison to the beautiful federal gold. A couple of my favorites were a 1942 Mercury Proof and a 1948 obverse target toned Roosevelt.

My collection is "So-Called Dollars" featuring the 1909 Alaska-Yukon Pacific Expo. Last October while searching on eBay I came upon this medal, HK-356a, NGC MS-63BN. This is a silver plated bronze and has oxidized to a flat dark brown patina.

Q. Should I submit this for conservation?

The toning looks even, attractive and original to my eye. I would leave it alone, but that's just my taste. Perhaps send to NCS for a look, in case it's heading to the "terminal" toning state that is so often mentioned. I've found them responsive and they can respond to the "need" for conservation as well as aesthetic considerations.

I cannot imagine a coin that dark looking any better after a dip. Please leave it alone.

This SC$1 appears to be misidentified. I would ask NGC about it. Looking at the cert verification page, it's clearly a copper medal, and it is not in need of conservation. It's also graded Brown.

There is no copper plated variety listed in HK, nor is there a 356A variety. This is probably 355 (copper) or even 354 (bronze). HK-356 is Gilt (gold-plated).

Please refer to the online "So-Called Dollar" site been updated since 2008.

Also see the below site for verification:

The SCD for my picture is an ungraded HK-356. Also consider plating can oxidize to brown when stored with other oxidizing metals.

I was not aware of this site, thanks for the link. I'm still not not sure that this medal is silver-plated. It looks very much like copper, but you have a better view of it than the NGC pictures provide. However, Silver plated coins that have oxidized are not eligible for RD, RB and BN designations, so there is something wrong.

Nice coins all!

I have to say this one:

NGC_MS67RB_Combo2.jpg

In my birth year set. Only 17 graded at this level, none higher, with a star.  The NGC Census doesn't show how many star coins there are for this grade.

If you click on the Filters tab at the top right of your Census page, you can select Star and it will show you the Star population. NGC has graded 17 in MS67RB and an addition 10 in MS67*RB. None are graded higher.

Not your style from what I've seen SM, right? But I REALLY love it!

My biggie from 2017 (and I can't believe I'm typing the year 2017 and it's now 2018?)

While I've generally been buying raw Washingtons and Franklins over the last several years, I do have a few higher end sets that I've been putting together for a long time, including a Type set.  Unfortunately I can no longer add PCGS coins to my NGC Registry, but here's the link...

https://coins.www.collectors-society.com/registry/coins/SetListing.aspx?PeopleSetID=31610&Ranking=all

That's a pretty two center you've got there!
