I recommend a trip to a local dealer to look around. Spend some money on real classic numismatic material. Attend a show or two. Then you might be in a position to decide which series you want to collect. I like purchasing coins from dealers who specialize in the series you like. Don't buy from auction houses until you know what nice coins should look like. These places can be dumping grounds for sub standard coins.
