variety is too minor for attribution

16 posts in this topic

I submitted a few coins and one of them returned to me slabbed MS65 but I had performed the variety plus tier on invoice.  It returned with a sticker saying "variety is too minor".  I am wondering what that term means.  It is a 1943 P jefferson nickel DDO-006 or FS-106.  The coin is a variety NGC recognizes per this site https://www.ngccoin.com/coin-varieties/jefferson-nickels/1943-p-ddo-5c-fs-106-1578/

I would prefer them to say "we did not see the variety you saw"  if that is a true statement.  But as is, it feels like they saw it but there was not a great wide spread on the letters to warrant it attribution?  Does anyone know what the statement means?

Lastly, if the variety is present on my submitted coin, is a recognized variety of NGC, and they do not put it on the slab, feels like money back to me?  SO, it has to mean the graders did not see what I tricked myself into seeing.

Thoughs?

I suspect this is the case. There are many DDO's for 1943-P and you could have another with some similarities

Yes, "too minor to list" means they did not think it was FS-106, or any other recognized variety.

This question has just been discussed on another TPGS site.

1. PCGS and NGC do limited varieties.

2. Some coins have many varieties that are only considered "significant" to specialists and the majority of them are not worth a lot of money.  Most collectors don't know of them and could care less!  For instance, there may be 1-2 major DDO for a date/mint and 16 minor DDO on the same coin.  The TPGS's walk a line. They claim to put a value on a coin.  So, DDO#1 sells for $100 and DDO#16 sells for - well, nothing because the folks interested look for their own rather than pay for one - Even $6.  If NGC put DDO#16 on a label, some crook would sell the "worthless" coin to an ignorant collector as a valuable Doubled Die and discount the "gem" to $75!  LOL.

Additionally, LDS coins are often not WORTH AS MUCH as EDS coins. AFAIK, NGC and PCGS list the varieties they do.  I feel for you buddy but that's the way it is.  If you want something not on the list, go to ANACS or ICG.

I' am rolling my eye here:  PS  When a grading service says: "variety is too minor" THAT'S WHAT IT MEANS.  They did NOT say "we don't see it" or anything else!

It is my belief, NGC does not have the right to say, we recognize the variety, are willing to accept $15 dollars for attribution, see the variety in your submission, but we are not placing the variety on the coin.  If they say it is too minor to warrant recognition, fine I understand and it is their right.  But to say no to something that they acknowledge exists and they recognize it exists on the submitted sample can not be true.  I will call in a day or two to clarify.  While the above is my opinion, I just am unable to see any way NGC could operate differently than my opinion.

My expectation is they used poor "free text" wording on the label that generated this confusion and the coin is actually not the DDO-006 I believed it is.  Perhaps if anything else, they will develop consistent phrases for events like this.  thanks to all

NGC has the right to do anything they deem appropriate for their business.  You have the right to complain to them if you feel they did not treat you correctly.

NGC publishes the complete list of die varieties they will recognize on their website. If the variety you submit turns out to be a different one, it will be labeled "too minor to list" because NGC does not include that variety in their catalog.

I appreciate your statement but I believe you are mistaken....They DO NOT have the right to say they recognize the variety, agree the coin has the variety, but then choose not to put it on the coin AND charge me for it.  if I get a refund, they can do that all day long, but otherwise, that is promising a service and not delivering what was purchased.  As is, I still have not gotten a chance to call.  My work hours dont line up real well.

There are also some very strong, very desirable die varieties that PCGS/NGC will not recognize because they are not published in certain books.

I am positive on the doubling, I am not positive I selected the correct DDO.  I choose to believe in NGCs knowledge over mine.  I assume they saw DDO, just not the one i attributed.

LOL!  Let me give you a tip,  If you start looking at slabbed War nickels from the four major services, you will find more "micro" doubled dies than you have the money to purchase.  Perhaps one day they will become more valuable.  Until then you'll have a great collection of what we like to call "fly-speck" varieties.  As I posted above, you have the option of using two other major grading services.

BTW,  IMO NGC owes you nothing.  I believe they publish what varieties they do.  However, whine enough on the chat boards and they may decide that "ignorance of their variety policy" is common and let's give him a free submission to make him a happy customer.

I agree and with the NGC library and the Internet the NGC experts can easily confirm them.  They still make the final decision on what they slab.
