Environmental damage Vs. Shipwreck damage

2 posts in this topic

Hi, I procured a peruvian 1/2 Reale (1684-1701), with a slew of other shipwreck coins, from a shop that bought/sold ONLY shipwreck coins. Later on I noticed that one of the coins I bought said environmental damage and didnt have a shipmark designation. What exactly does that mean? Would I be able to find its origins? Thanks a bunch!

Thank you for your question. There would be no way to determine where the coin came from. It was not submitted as part of a shipwreck. The coin did experience some damage cause by the environment. An example of that would be corrosion displayed as small, fine pitting on the surface of the coin usually found in coins that have been in the ocean or buried in the ground.
