Need help as I am exited about this find

11 posts in this topic

First I should  have stated that these are all different pictures of the same exact dime, but in different lighting.

This is a circulated dime, that is not in bad shape at all. What has me exited about this dime, is that it appears to be a weak strike, that has caused the words "In", and "We" to be left out of "In God We Trust", also the year can be seen as either 199?, or 198? since only the "19 is visible while the third digit can be seen with the top circle, while the fourth number is completely missing, and yet the "D" for Denver can be clearly as a good strike.

There are no scratch marks what so ever that I can see, so it leads me to believe it is a weak strike based on the smooth surface, and the clear strike of the Neck, and "D" for Denver.

Let me knows what you folks think, and do not worry if it breaks my heart to find out that this is common on the dimes.  I intend to take it down to the nearest coin shop for further analysis. 20170211221410_IMG_1289A.JPG.89ce3ea712fb98ede956a3e9622221dc.JPG20170211221410_IMG_1289.JPG.bf9a0c4b14fffdddd5438c54d300cb2f.JPG20170211221358_IMG_1286.JPG.4340cac288c07019bcef058ff5911de3.JPG20170211221336_IMG_1283.JPG.5cbacd9814a5697b1af655fefc7f66e5.JPG20170211221322_IMG_1281.JPG.066073e8055ec44544bbde6bbf134220.JPG20170211221437_IMG_1292.JPG.fe2c17305660ce51e7f23823dca9c632.JPG

Some of it certainly could be a striking anomaly (especially the weakness in the hair), but the missing letters are likely from a grease filled die.  I don't think it is worth much, if any, premium.

The point of collecting coins is to have neat things to look at and I think its neat as can be.  A better find than showing up on the mint website and ordering some 2017 MS69's or having ordered some 1985 MS69's.

JoeVeteran, I'd put it someplace I could show it off to people.  Its a neat thing that may start conversations.  Whatever you do, before you push it into a soda machine PM me!

Your post makes me think that you may have misinterpreted my intent.  I was not trashing the original poster's coin at all.  I was trying to present information succinctly.

I may have.  You said nothing offensive.  The news is on so perhaps I am just in a sensitive mood.

My bias towards unusual coins is showing.

The other thing to research - error-ref.com is a great site - is die deterioration strikes.  That's the other common find...

Not worth much if any premium, but it's fun looking!

Thank you for your input, I will check out the error-ref.com.
