They've likely been removed from holders and the holders burned. Good chance the DE have been taken to an urban area and sold to pawn shops and coin dealers. Untraceable and not recoverable, unless the thief was an insider or left coin in the holders.

80 x $1,300 = $104,000. Pawn shop offer + $75,000.

That may be a useful criminal strategy, but nice Unc. gold coins like that are bound to arouse suspicion by anyone who wasn't born yesterday. If I were the victim or hired as a gumshoe on the case, I would keep up the heat until evidence surfaces.

Bright flashy Double Eagles (even though quite common) should bring question to buyers if they are raw. Hopefully dealers and pawn brokers in the area have been notified.

Little suspicion is likely from typical pawn brokers and coin dealers....only the "good guys" will be suspicious, and greed often overrides suspicions.

That may be true but it would be impossible to fence these in a short period of time in my part of the country. I don't know a dealer or pawn shop that would be free to pay for these here as a cash deal or elsewise ignoring the obvious alarm bells. The buyer could become an accessory to crime and should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. Possibly the diamond district in NYC would be a try to fence them or similar districts in major cities, but again, alert police have full rights to do overviews of transactions.

You are far more optimistic than I. Hope you are right and the coins will be recovered undamaged.
