Probably a stupid question...

So, I don't know anything about coins and I figure you guys do, so I found this Canadian nickel from 1953 with flattened edges instead of the normal round smooth edge.

Is this something I should hang onto, or am I 4 nickels away from a gumball...?

According to Krause, all CDN 1953 nickels are supposed to be Cr/Ni plated steel, 12-sided. Some are worth a lot if they have the shoulder strap and the far leaf, or lack the strap and have the near leaf.

should have some silver content

Try again. Canadian five cent pieces stopped having silver content in 1921 (except for possibly a few very recent made for collector issues)
