College graduation gift from an old girlfriend.... 0

After watching "Castaway" last night, I was compelled to dig this up. I found it after some searching, packed away securely in an old box. It's a 'Standard' hunt-case pocket watch, 16 size. The year was 1977 (My gosh, that's 39 years !). I graduated from Buffalo State College with a degree in education. When I went into school, four years earlier, they were screaming for teachers. When I came out, I wasn't needed.

I remember that girlfriend fondly, she was special, and she thought I would love this watch. She was right, I did.

Well, I ended up in the coin business, and had to spend a lot of time on the road to make it work. Sure enough, somebody took that girl away from me. But I still have the watch, and it runs great !

Does anyone else still remember a their graduation gifts ? Were any numismatically related ?

I used to give out morgan dollars as both graduation gifts and wedding gifts. I would give ones that were 100 years old. However that only worked until 2004 (1904) and I stopped doing it. For weddings I would give 2. I suppose that in 2021 (1921) I can start back.

Hundred year old dollars are fabulous gifts. 2021 will be here before you know it....as you say.....

When I was in grammar school, we had a Monsignor at the school that gave silver dollars out to kids with 'A''s on their report cards. This was the early 60's, dollars were face, but a dollar was a lot of money. You're talking 20 full size candy bars.

I have some grammar school friends that still have those dollars from Msgr. Hennesey....

At "the Dollar Store" assuming they had an astute cashier I bet those students that still have Monsignor Hennesey's silver dollars could still get 20 full size candy bars for each of them.

This college does graduate cool specialists because in your college, unlike where i studied, and unlike most colleges in USA, the teachers are very strict. I heard that teachers do not even allow you to buy homework from professional services  🖌 because they believe that it harms not only the level of education of graduates, but also discipline. We certainly didn't have that. And it's good that i went to college where the teachers were much less principled.
