Minting: How were coins / token edges made with dies without collars

Some Civil War Tokens are struck on larger planchets which may be possible using dies without collars. What are these dies called and how do you get a perfect edge from a die like this? Did the die sinkers trim the tokens after striking?

 

I also asked this ATS but there's not that much info on these types of dies.

Medals are a good analogy. They were/are commonly struck on blanks without a restraining collar. Medals are machined true after each blow (or group of strikes). Old US Mint records show copies of the same medal in gold having different prices depending on the final weight.

Great info on medals Roger. Love the history around pricing.

 

So, instead of being pieces struck on larger planchets, could the pieces above simply be standard strike planchets that weren't machined after striking?

 

Would be interesting to see that machining in action as well as I imagine it would have been difficult to preserve the faces.

Roger, you would think there would be damage to the devices if they were machined true after the strike.

After thinking about this approach, I was also thinking of this issue.

 

It seems to be a minor mystery how these were struck.

Cheap tokens were probably struck on whatever stock was available. If it was larger than the die, it didn't matter.
